Description/Duties & Responsibilities

The City is currently recruiting for part-time, temporary, seasonal (PTS) employees to assist in providing library patrons with a variety of public library programs and services. This position requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.


  • Assists patrons by locating books, finding reference materials utilizing online reference services, providing information regarding programs or general information, and answering simple reference questions while referring the more difficult questions to higher level staff
  • Assists with the organization, set-up, and clean-up of library facilities for library special programs
  • Participates in the implementation of library programs, including programs and activities for children
  • Performs basic clerical duties, including maintaining library records regarding requests, circulation, registration, programs, and the collection of fines
  • Assists patrons at the circulation desk and addresses issues and concerns with patrons as they arise; checks materials in and out; registers patrons and issues library cards; creates and maintains patron's records; processes overdue library material and resolves problems regarding fines for overdue, lost, or damaged material; claims returned items; receives and prepares receipts for money received; logs patrons using the terminals
  • Organizes library materials for re-shelving; inspects returned materials, including books, CDs, and DVDs for damage
  • Performs simple mending and repair of materials as necessary
  • Shelves library materials in proper order and location; sorts and maintains books on shelves, unpacks boxes, assists with processing of materials and assists with sorting of donations
  • Maintains the overall clean and professional environment of the library with shelf reading and blocking of collections
  • Searches shelves for items showing as returned but not found by patrons and staff
  • Maintains program calendars and site reservations
  • Provides passport services to the public
  • Performs related duties and assists library staff as directed

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma/GED equivalent OR experience working or volunteering in a library or similar environment
  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish is highly desirable
  • Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for a Library Aide

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic library services, practices and terminology, library equipment and resources, including a personal computer, and common reference tools
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of proper public desk and phone etiquette; English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Strong customer skills and the ability to handle tough customer service situations
  • Knowledge of basic computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
  • Ability to learn and apply new information and skills
  • Ability to perform a variety of clerical and office support duties of a general and specialized nature in support of library operations
  • Ability to learn the organization, operation, and services of the library and outside agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities
  • Ability to correctly interpret and apply general policies and procedures
  • Ability to demonstrate professional maturity, good judgment, and initiative
  • Ability to establish and maintain a variety of files and records
  • Ability to work effectively with persons from diverse social, cultural and economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to lift, draft, and push files, paper, and documents weighting up to 25 pounds

In compliance with the California law, positions working with children are required to be mandated child abuse reporters. A mandated reporter is an individual who is obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.

As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code 3100-3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.

In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.

PTS workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 1,000 hours.
